Over the past eight years, we’ve helped thousands of families realize energy savings with the Heat Smart Kit.

An initiative dedicated to keeping America warm.

Our mission is to help low income households save money and reduce overall energy use by encouraging them to change their heating habits and behavior. To do that, we have developed a Heat Smart Kit that offers a three-pronged strategy:

  • Warmth – quality, low-cost woolen blankets
  • Conservation – weatherstripping
  • Education – energy tips

Over the past eight years, we’ve helped thousands of families in states as diverse as Maine and California by harnessing the power of the Heat Smart Kit to realize energy savings.

We develop partnerships with local Community Action Programs and Energy/Utility companies across the country as a cost-effective and efficient channel to distribute our kits. At the same time, our flexible approach helps them reach their program goals cost-efficiently. Plus, we’re always looking for ways to leverage our impact: we’re a certified vendor of National Grid and a member of the RI Alliance of Healthy Homes.

Our roots

Founded in 2005, Heat Smart is an initiative of Woonsocket’s Northwest Woolen Mills, America’s largest industrial woolen blanket manufacturer. They’re known for their ability to make a high quality wool blanket at a low cost, an efficiency which we pass on to our Heat Smart partners. Northwest’s blankets have helped disaster victims around the world, from Hurricane Sandy  in the U.S. to earthquakes in Haiti and flooding in Somalia.

Not only do we capitalize on their wool expertise, we take advantage of their logistics skills as well. This makes us ideally suited to work with government and non-profit partners to quickly develop programs and distribute kits.

Energy burden higher for those who can least afford it.
