The secret to unlocking energy savings

  • Heat Smart

We have said Heat Smart is a great idea with huge potential since the core idea is simple – empowering people to turn down their thermostats at night to save money. Turns out we’re not the only ones who think thermostat setbacks work. Not only are setbacks the cornerstone of programmable thermostat products, many other scientific studies have reached the same conclusion based on the fundamental principles of physics.

Dr. Allison Bailes, III, Ph.D. who writes the Energy Vanguard blog, reported on a series of eight studies done for a gas utility in the northeast U.S. As you might guess, many factors influence the amount of savings, including climate, a home’s energy systems, and the building envelope. After accounting for those measures, these studies still found energy bill savings ranged from 5.0% to 8.2% – significant for any budget.

You can read more about the science in her entire post here or read the summary in our study. The non-scientific among us might prefer this blog post from This Old House on how adjusting the thermostat can save you money.

But setting the thermostat back is only the first step. People still need tools to stay warm, tools that will empower them to turn the heat down every night. That’s where Heat Smart Kits come in. Our high quality woolen blankets keep people warm while the weatherstripping stops drafts and keeps homes cozy. Our studies showed that having these tools were the game-changer. They were exactly what people needed to change behavior and get in the habit of turning the heat down, long-term. You can download our own study here.

We’re working with partners across the country such as community action agencies, health and welfare groups, utilities, and government programs to get more low-cost kits into the hands of more needy families. You could be the spark to start efforts in your community. See how easy it is here. Then contact us to start helping your constituents put an end to heat insecurity.

So now you know the secret – pass it on!
